What is Coeliac disease?
Hi, I'm Dr Anton Rajadurai. I'm a gastroenterologist that specialises in interventional endoscopy.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine.
Common symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and fatigue, but they can vary widely among individuals. Some people may also experience symptoms such as weight loss, anaemia or skin rashes. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to check for specific antibodies and may be confirmed through a biopsy of the small intestine.
The exact cause of coeliac disease is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. If you have a family history of the disease, your risk may be higher.
Currently, the primary treatment for coeliac disease is a strict gluten-free diet. This means avoiding all sources of gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. Many individuals find that their symptoms improve significantly within weeks of eliminating gluten from their diet.
It is essential to work with a healthcare professional or a dietitian to ensure that your diet remains balanced and nutritious. Monitoring and ongoing support can help manage the condition effectively.
With adherence to a gluten-free diet, most individuals with coeliac disease can lead healthy, active lives.
