In some cases, patients may be suitable to be referred directly for a procedure without needing to have a full consultation with a Gastroenterologist first – this is called “Open Access Endoscopy”.

Open Access Endoscopy may be appropriate for patients who require urgent intervention, have clearly identified or diagnosed symptoms, and who are otherwise medically low-risk.

All referrals are triaged by a Gastroenterologist and if a patient is thought to be suitable, they will be booked for a procedure at their preferred location, and a pre-op telehealth appointment with a doctor beforehand to go over the details and consent for the procedure.

Open Access Endoscopy can reduce the waiting time for a procedure as patients don’t require a full consultation beforehand.

This may not be suitable for all patients. Sometimes other investigations are required or alternative conservative/non-procedural options may be explored first.
