Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is used to scan the wall of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, and the underlying tissues and structures such as the bile ducts and pancreas.
Under sedation, a thin, flexible tube with an ultrasound scanner attached to it (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the oesophagus and stomach and then into the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Ultrasound images are taken and can aid in the diagnosis of areas of concern.
EUS is done as a day procedure. Patients will need to fast beforehand. Recovery is usually straightforward with no/minimal after-effects from the procedure. Your doctor will discuss the procedure with you in detail if this is recommended for you.
